General Duty Assistants (GDAs) play a vital role in the healthcare system by providing essential support to patients and assisting medical staff in delivering quality care. Depending on the setting, they may be known by various titles such as Nursing Assistants, Orderlies, Nursing Aides, or Bedside Assistants. Internationally, they are often referred to as Patient Care Assistants or Nursing Assistants.
GDAs work in close collaboration with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, usually under their supervision, to implement prescribed care plans and ensure the comfort and well-being of patients. Their responsibilities may include assisting with daily activities, monitoring vital signs, maintaining hygiene, and providing emotional support.
Given the nature of their role, GDAs must possess key personal qualities such as a strong sense of service, empathy, effective communication skills, ethical conduct, and the ability to follow instructions with attention to detail. Their compassionate presence and hands-on care contribute significantly to the patient experience and the smooth functioning of healthcare facilities.
